The US government wouldn't be crazy enough to shoot down a plane and say the other side did it by accident, as this would be an obvious way of convincing the world the rebels are evil and should be destroyed - I don't think the US government would expect people to swallow the fact that a airliner was shot down by rebels by accident. A US government secret intervention one would expect to be much more eloquent and understated than blatantly blasting an airliner out of the skies, and certainly not another Malaysia Airlines one for obvious reasons. Therefore the separatists actually did shoot it down by accident.
