One of the primary attractions of AtWar are the quality and variety of maps. The paywall to access the map editor acts as a barrier to entry resulting in less maps and map makers. How is that beneficial to AtWar the company and community? In my assessment it clearly does not.

Map makers create value, not only for themselves, but potentially for the entire AtWar community. When someone makes a map it acts as a positive externality. One person creates a map, but the entire player base can derive value from it.

In other words, AtWar is saying no to free labour, to people who want to create value for the company and the community. Is it just a very poor policy or am I missing something?

Imagine this, somebody has to pay for this map editor. It doesn't magically appear out of thin air.

Say you remove the paywall, that would also mean removing restrictions on people who can host maps because how else can people test their maps? This would lead to many clutter on the game screen.

If people didn't pay for the map editor it wouldn't be their in the first place, currently their are clans and systems in place that allow players to borrow a person's account to create their own map.

I don't think it's a good idea personally, the map editor is a major factor to entice people to buying premium. If that factor is eliminated then the devs lose something that potentially gives them lots of money. As it stands right now, there's not much good stuff you can get from micro-transactions other than premium. The best things about premium is the editor, general, and premium strategies. Protocoins are pretty useless and they don't provide you with much incentive to want to buy them, even moreso if you already have lifetime premium. I myself have bought premium in the past SOLELY for access to the editor. Removing that paywall removes a major source of income for the game, one that's well needed for the game in it's current state. If the game's to grow, funds are needed to use for advertising, hiring new developers, etc. I just don't think it's likely this will happen as it stands right now. Unless in the future some update comes out giving a good reason for protocoins to be purchased that could therefore substitute the losses from having no paywall from the editor, it just doesn't make sense for it to be removed right now.
